Refining Search

The Travel Mail search engine automatically helps you to refine your search results by prompting additional options, for example destination and holiday type. These options are words that will filter the initial results to help you find what you are looking for more quickly. Each time you make a search the best options to improve your search will appear under the search box on the left hand side.

Eg: Search for : ski. The refining options include popular skiing countries or resorts, snow holidays or short breaks, and family or singles related content. By selecting one of these refine options, you will be presented with a shorter list of results that are relevant to that term.

Remember that the Travelmail search engine will return results based upon the content of each page, which means that because a single article may cover many topics and/or destinations, the list of refine options may sometimes contain some unexpected entries. In the “ski” example above, you will also find “sunshine holidays” and “horseriding” because some articles cover these topics in addition to ski.

Option numbers
Each option makes the search more specific and makes the search more personalised. The number next to each option shows you how many results exist for that option.

Eg. Search for : ski. The City/town options may look like this: Zermatt (16), Whistler (13), Courchevel (13), Chamonix (12), Val-D'Isere (10)...

More Options
By default the most popular five options are shown in each country, holiday type etc. If you are looking for more options then you can always click the orange down button next to the options. The page will then extend to show more options in the same area.

Eg. Search for : ski and click the orange down button next to City/town. Now the list of options increases from 5 resorts to 98 resorts.

Refined Searches
Clicking on any option takes you to the smaller set of more relevant results. At the top of the results page it will show “refined by” and the option word.

You can further refine and add more options to the search. Each time the results will become less as only the most targeted results remain.

Removing Refined Searches
You can remove the refined options at any time and in any order. At the top of the results page in the “refined by” box click on the option word to remove that option from the search. You can also click on “remove all” to delete all the refining options.

Google Maps

We have integrated Google's maps into Travelmail to provide an alternative way to navigate featured articles and stories on the site.

Map Pins
We have added map pins to the maps to highlight places or areas where more information is available. Click on a pin to get more information in a white bubble. The text may contain links to further information and related pages. This may include recent news stories, destination guides, travel articles and contributions from Travelmail users (Your Holidays).

Navigating Maps
You can move around the maps using the up, down, left and right arrows. Alternatively, you can click and drag on the map with your left mouse button. To zoom in and out use the + and - buttons.

System requirements
Google maps currently supports the following browsers: Internet Explorer 6.0+ Firefox 0.8+ Safari 1.2.4+ Netscape 7.1+ Mozilla 1.4+ Opera 8.02+

Troubleshooting
If you are trouble having viewing the GoogleMaps or using the pins we suggest trying Google's own troubleshooting guide as this is very comprehensive. http://maps.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=10789

Using Search

The Travelmail archive contains thousands of travel articles, news stories and destination guides, plus a rapidly growing number of articles that users have submitted using the Your Holidays feature. To help you find what you are looking for, this site incorporates a powerful search engine that makes it quick and easy for you to find Travelmail content that interests you. WebPages from other sites are not searched.

The search engine works much like the major search engines. It will return results based upon the actual text that appears on a web page and also the context and relevance of that text.

There are three ways in which you can search Travelmail content:

1) Free text search: Type what you are looking for into the top search box and then click the Search button. The search engine will then display a list of articles, guides and other Travelmail content that contain content relevant to your request. Clicking on the title of a result will open the full article.

If you are looking for something more specific or simply get too may results, you can try the following:

Phrase Searches
If you want to search for a few words that appear together rather than as separate words on the page you can put quotation marks around the search words. Obviously, the number of results that are returned will be significantly reduced as you use longer and more specific phrases. Eg: Search for : “spanish golf" will return results that contain this exact phrase.

Negative Searches
If your search term has more than one meaning (for example there are several places in the world called san antonio) you can focus your search by putting a minus sign ("-") in front of words related to the meaning you want to avoid. Eg: Search for : san antonio –Ibiza.

2) Search by destination: We have listed, in alphabetical order, the most popular destinations in the dropdown list. Simply click on the destination that you are interested in and the search engine will display a list of articles, guides and other Travelmail content related your selection.

3) Search by holiday type: If the type of holiday that you are interested in is more important than the desination, then this is a good place to start. Select one one of the entries in the dropdown list and the search engine will display a list of articles, guides and other Travelmail content that refers to your selection.

Competitions and promotions

TravelMail runs regular competitions and promotions. These are provided by third parties and change according to supply. Competitions usually require you to register but the requirement changes for each competition. If you have entered previous competitions, you can login to enter.

For all current competitions see the Competitions and promotions page. Each promotion may have individual terms and conditions but all are covered by TravelMail usual promotion rules.

Your Holidays

Your Holidays

Your Holidays is an opportunity for you to share your holiday experiences with other Travelmail users. Whether you had a great time or a terrible time abroad you can tell the world about it and encourage others to go (or possibly stay away).

You can also add pictures and videos to your submission. Pictures and Videos bring colour to your pages and help other people understand your experience better.

Searching for content in Your Holidays:

To help you find content of interest to you that has been submitted by other Travelmail users, each contribution has been classified based upon the subject and content. We call this “tagging” . We have listed the most popular destinations and holiday types along with the number of contributions show in brackets. To display the full list click the orange down button next to the heading.

Click on a destination or a holiday type and Your Holidays will display a list of all the contibutions from Travelmail users relevant to your selection. Clicking on the title of a result will open the full article.

Send your experience / Submitting a contribution

There are five simple steps to adding your holiday. The steps are:

1. Select a destination – Pick the country, region or city/resort you went to. This will help us to categorise your submission (known as tagging) which will enable other Travelmail users to find it when searching for information on a particular destination. 2. Add your experience – A free text area for your story or tips. Please keep this to under 500 words. 3. Add your photos & video – Upload your Photos and Videos from your pc 4. Your Details – Your name and basic contact details 5. Holiday type – Select the categories your holiday should be in. This will help us to categorise your submission (known as tagging) which will enable other Travelmail users to find it when searching for information on a particular destination.

Uploading Photos We have tried to make uploading images as easy as possible.

To start with your images should be saved into a folder on your pc. They should be in a GIF or JPG format, which is typical for most digital cameras. The image should be less than 5mb in size. There is no restriction on the width and height of an image. Most images from digital cameras should be acceptable.

Images are uploaded one at a time by using the browse button to find the image in your local folder. Please give each image a caption to explain what is in the picture.

Uploading Videos Videos should be in any of the following formats: AVI,MPG,MOV,MPEG,3GP and MP4. Videos should be less than 20 mb in size and no longer than 2 minutes.

Videos can be uploaded in a similar way to images. Use the browse function to locate the movie file on your local computer. Press submit to upload a copy to the TravelMail Site.

When will my contribution appear on Travelmail?

All submissions will pass through our moderation process which can take up to a week. We are not obliged to publish any material supplied by you, but if we do accept your contribution we will make it live on Travelmail as soon as possible.

Acceptable Usage Policy Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for information relating to material submitted to this website.
